How Much Is Too Much?

It's no secret that I love Rumi of Fashion Toast and think she is incredibly stylish. However, lately some of her outfits have got me thinking about the line between looking stylishly undressed and, for lack of a better term, like a skank. Exhibit A:

The high-waisted pants deslutify it... not. I'm sorry, Rumi, but please stick to wearing that tank with a bra underneath it. That way it looks sexy, not like you put on your dad's stretched out old wifebeater and forgot underwear. It doesn't even look good. At all. It's just unflattering in a bad way. Worn with the bra or even that mesh bodysuit, I would love this outfit. But I don't want to see that much of you in public, except for the perverts. Who probably went wild over this outfit. I sincerely hope you taped it in place. Just because Erin Wasson did it, doesn't mean you should do it. It looks bad on Erin, too. But we all know how I feel about her. Which brings me to Exhibit B. See how much better it looks with the bra? And compare Rumi to Erin. Which one should be the model? (Hint: It's not the manly one. And I'm not talking about the one with the stubble.)

And here's Exhibit C: I'm not sure what possessed you to wear a extremely thin bra under a mesh bodysuit, but let me tell you it's just... ugh. You, the girl who is as tall as me and at least 15 lbs. lighter, would be the person to rock this if anyone but I think this is strictly a look for the pornos.

Of course, Rumi can wear whatever she pleases and I write this doubting she'll ever read it. But... wait stop, Hannah! I'm not going to apologize for what I've said. I love Rumi, and I'm jealous of her hotness and the fact that she can wear things my 15-year-oldness can't possibly deal with. But I sincerely think she would look better if she covered up slightly more. To end things on a positive note, how much do I love this?
It's still very exposing, but with the fur... gahgahgah. I'm such a hypocrite. I'm a vegetarian who loves fur. I would never buy real fur of course... unless maybe it was thrifted.... But anyway so gorgeous.

I'm not a huge fan of the Erin Wesson "style" of skimpy dressing, no matter how attractive the wearer.

I totally agree with you!! I love her style but lately its been getting a little too slutty as you said. I love your blog by the way :]

i think it's pretty rude of you to devote a whole post to criticizing Rumi. Seriously. How do you think she would react to this if she saw it, and what gives you the right to criticize her?

i agree. i love rumi and she is extremely gifted (i am soo jealous) for being gorgeous, super skinny (but not anorexic-ish), and tall but the first picture that you put up of her was way too revealing. she could've worn that mesh body suit or just something underneath. and, it made her look lowly.

but i love the last look. i am not a fur fan (never have been) but it works in this outfit.

oh yeah, by the way, do you want to trade links with me? please let me know asap...

i think that the top outfit would look better with a bra or bandeau underneath, like you said
and i'm a vegetarian who loves fur too! but i feel like vintage fur's okay.
anyway, a link-up would be fantastic!

@Anonymous,

This is my blog, and I have every right criticize the style of whoever I want. I don't mean to do it in a mean way, though. I'm just pointing out something I noticed. And Rumi, if you somehow do end up reading this, first of all you're awesome (as I spent half the post stating) and I didn't intend to be mean-spirited. =]

she looks amazing and why don't you wait until you even know what slutty means before you criticize someone for not wearing a bra?

hypocrite much? little miss 15 year old short shorts bad girl in her daddy's basement?

Yeah, I totally agree. She's been pushing that envelope way too far lately. I don't want to see that many ribs on anyone.

Fellow veggie who hearts fur.

I agree...I mean, I love her...but honestly? I don't know. It just looks good because someone with a great body is wearing it.

This is your blog! Preach it, sister!

i think it's uncalled for for you to criticize rumi's style. i mean i adore you and her both, but if you are going to critique someones style constructively, what sense does it make to do it where they can't see?

it's her choice to wear what she pleases, risque as it maybe be. she can pull it off and even if i wouldn't wear it, i think it's weird to critique it. =/

my honest opinion on the subject. please don't take it the wrong way!

p.s yes, please please please don't take it the wrong way! xD' have a lollipop.

Yeah I definately know where your coming from. I just think her style has gotten less inventive lately, trying to be like wasson and such.
I don't think you were out of hand, with FT getting so big now with like a million comments a day theres bound to have critisism. Actually, I read a bunch of the comments on that picure of her with that tiny "tank top" thing cuz I though that was just a step too far.

@Arabelle, don't worry, I see your point. I actually commented about it on her blog too. And thanks for the lollipop =]

This is just done in really poor taste. Maybe she should make a post critiquing your "style"?

Anonymous said...

Yeah I dont read that blog; but I agree with you..but I mostly think she looks terribly cold...well at least you have a new nickname "little miss short shorts" haha that was too funny.

Most recent anonymous, she has every right to do a post critiquing my style, and in fact you do too. It doesn't mean I have to agree with what's said. It's kind of hilarious how the only people who say even slightly negative things are anonymous (with the exception of Arabelle). It's not like I would get really offended if someone comments that one of my posts is done in poor taste.

i really respect you for this. i can see that this post is completely in rumi's best interest. she is an extremely talented girl who has so many amazing things ahead of her. thank you for your honesty! anons- if you have something to say, there is no need to hide. if you don't care to read this, go away!

Most of the time I think she can pull it off, but I do think that she is heading in the direction of Wasson clone, and I don't know how I feel about that.

i was thinking that maybe rumi was going for a magazine editorial type look purely for eye blog candy? i highly doubt she wore that out in public to go run errands/get coffee/go to work/whatever. or maybe she did haha who knows. works for me though.

wow-this post really rubbed me the wrong way. I expected to see an onslaught of negative comments, as opposed to everyone agreeing. it just strikes me as odd for one fashion blogger to dedicate an entire post criticizing another fashion blogger's style, especially for her something like "sluttiness."
I mean, if I was gonna wear a sheer chiffon top, I'd probably wear a tank underneath cause I'M not comfortable with overtly sexual looks EVEN if I thought a bra underneath would work so much better
but if someone else feels fabulous exposing that much skin in a stylish way then who am I to judge?
as long as they feel good

I guess I just don't really see the point of the post
but as you said, it's your blog (which I do enjoy) & you have the right to rant about whatever you please. I just thought I'd voice my feelings
